Is this animal cruelty? Owner turns his dog into Pikachu

Miami Florida - At an NBA game, a basketball fan brought an unusual accessory: a small dog that had been colored like the Pokémon character Pikachu. Even though the owner probably vibed with his crafty work, the internet was anything but thrilled.

On Tuesday, thousands of fans visited FTX Arena in Florida to watch the Miami Heat vs. Minnesota Timberwolves game.

One of these fans had his small dog with him that he had decked out with unusually bright colors.

Instead of its natural fur color, the little four-legged friend had neon yellow hair with bright red cheeks, making him look like the famous Pokémon character, Pikachu.

A clip of the canine playing basketball was posted by Twitter user @cjzero.

In the video, bystanders are heard asking questions about the chirpy dog squirming in its owner's arms.

"Back here at FTX [Stadium] and what's that?" one of two men asks in amazement. "What the hell," the other says.

Apparently, the two gentlemen needed some time to regain their composure, as they soon found themselves busting out in laughter. "I think the dog probably didn't approve of that paint job," one finally quips with amusement.

However, social media users were not as amused by the dog's unnatural hairdo.

"This is animal cruelty," one person wrote in response to the video. Many seemed to agree with this opinion, linking to the animal rights organization PETA in the replies.

"Idiot!" one user wrote. "Poor dog, this country is so ridiculous."

"The dog hates his owner almost as much as I do," another user commented.

According to A Heart for Animals, it's actually a terrible idea to dye your doggo's fur, as it can cause various consequential damages.

For one, animals can be allergic to the dyes, which could cause itching or eczema. In some cases, the toxins in the dye are even absorbed into the digestive system, poisoning the dog, which could lead to death.

In addition, the process of coloring the coat is very stressful to a dog's senses, and the corrosive smells and time-consuming treatments usually trigger nervousness and anxiety.

In addition, these treatments often cause behavioral problems. Dogs with dyed coats often lose their own smell, which puts their socialization with other dogs in danger.
