Musk faces heat over lawyer's Texas House bid in district with SpaceX ties
Austin, Texas - Billionaire Elon Musk is facing criticism after it was recently revealed that one of his lawyers is running for Congress in a Texas district tied directly to his business interests.
Chris Gober is a Republican candidate running to represent Texas' 10th Congressional District, and while he regularly touts his staunch Christian faith and loyalty to President Donald Trump, he has notably evaded mentioning his deep ties to Musk.
According to The Daily Beast, recent Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings revealed that Lex Politica, a law firm founded by Gober, received more than $2.2 million for legal work for Musk’s American PAC this year and last year alone.
The news comes as Musk has used the PAC to funnel unprecedented amounts of money into the midterm elections in support of Republican candidates and groups that back them.
To date, he has spent over $50 million, with the majority of the money going towards races in Texas, including Senate hopeful Ken Paxton's race against Democrat James Talarico.
Gober's ties to Musk have raised concerns as Texas' District 10 is home to Terafab, a chip-making factory jointly owned by Musk's companies SpaceX and Tesla.
His firm also appears to still be working closely with Musk – Wired reported on Thursday that Lex Politica and the America PAC recently formed an "election integrity" group called the Association of State and Local Election Officials, which appears to align itself with President Trump's false stolen election claims.
Democrat Caitlin Rourk is also running to represent the district, but the most recent poll taken last month found her trailing behind Gober by 7 points.
