Petersburg, Virginia - Multiple suspects are still at large after a mass shooting at Virginia State University that left multiple people hospitalized and one in critical condition.

In an X post shared on Saturday morning, the university – a historically Black college – said officers arrived at the 3300 block of Boisseau Street at 1:28 AM, where they "discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds outside VSU residence halls."

The victims were transported to a local hospital, where four are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, while the fifth is in critical condition.

Local police told the BBC on Saturday afternoon that they believe there were multiple suspects.

A lockdown was immediately initiated after the shooting, but it was lifted around 8:30 AM, despite no suspects being detained.

"We don't have anybody in custody," said Lieutenant James Lamb of the Chesterfield County Police Department. "We know there was more than one shooter, so I would say the suspects are still at large."

In a follow-up post, the university confirmed that at least one of the victims was a VSU student, who has recently been released from the hospital. Lamb has also said that at least one of the victims was a minor.

The school – which is scheduled to begin classes on Monday – further said: "Law enforcement does not believe there is an immediate threat to the VSU campus community."
