Michigan – For seven days, every trace of a 70‑year‑old hiker vanished. Injured, hypothermic, and completely on his own, he fought his way through the harsh wilderness of a remote island in Michigan.

The experienced hiker Craig Berg set out on an extended solo trek in Isle Royale National Park, as the Detroit Free Press reports.

Berg was supposed to return last week and catch the ferry home, but he never showed up. His wife, Debbie, eventually raised the alarm.

A massive search then began in an area that is especially challenging for rescuers.

The national park lies near the Canadian border and spans roughly 207 square miles. The terrain is notoriously rugged.

Adding to the difficulty, there is no cell service in the remote wilderness, and motorized vehicles are prohibited.

The crucial break came a week later, last Saturday. With the help of other hikers, police and search dogs finally located the missing 70‑year‑old.

Then the spectacular rescue from the wilderness began.

A US Coast Guard helicopter took Berg out of the rugged terrain with a rope winch.

He was then taken to a hospital for examination. How serious his injuries were and what happened to him during the week in the wilderness remain unknown to the public.

"Further details about Berg’s condition and the circumstances of his disappearance are still unknown," a Coast Guard statement said.

The relief after the happy ending was immense.

"We are extremely grateful we were able to get Mr. Berg safely off the island and deliver him to the medical care he needed," police spokesperson Ben Eckola said.

He also thanked the hikers who discovered the missing person, as well as the many responders and volunteers.
