Jacksonville, Florida - Democratic socialist Angie Nixon triumphed in her primary race on Tuesday to represent Florida in the US Senate.
Nixon, who currently represents District 13 in the Florida House, won the Democratic nomination for Senate in an upset victory against retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman.
According to the Associated Press, Nixon got 56.1% of the vote to Vindman's 43.9%, despite his massively outspending her in the race.
A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Nixon had campaigned on a platform calling for Medicare for All, free childcare, free paid family and sick leave, a national rent freeze and eviction moratorium, as well as a universal jobs program, among other priorities.
"Florida, we did it!" Nixon said in her victory speech. "We showed the world what organized people can accomplish, and we showed the world what the people of Florida are all about."
"This win is for the little guys and little girls. They told us to get in line, but we knew better," Nixon continued.
"We, the hard-working, everyday people of Florida, sent a shock wave to the Washington DC establishment, and they better get ready, because they ain't seen nothing yet!"
Nixon is up against Republican nominee Ashley Moody in the special election on November 3.
Moody was appointed in 2025 to fill the Senate seat left vacant by Marco Rubio when he became the Trump administration's secretary of state. She has the backing of President Donald Trump.
Whichever candidate wins the election in November will finish out the remaining two years of Rubio's term in the Senate.
