Washington DC - Supporters of President Donald Trump cheered on Germany's extreme-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party after it won a landslide victory in a key state election on Sunday.
The reaction from MAGA loyalists came in the hours after the AfD shot to a historic victory in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, securing 43.8% of the vote, more than double that of their closest rivals, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which secured 17.2%.
As a result, it is expected the AfD will take control of a German state legislature for the first time. This would also be the first time that a far-right political party has held government in Germany since the end of World War II.
The AfD is known for their radical, far-right stance on immigration, particularly their policy of "re-migration." They're platform is ultra-nationalistic, highly Islamophobic, and Euro-skeptic.
While Trump has not explicitly responded to the election results on Sunday, he did post an infographic of the results on Truth Social, indicating his interest.
Former US ambassador to Germany during Trump's first term, Richard Grenell, celebrated the results as "a huge win and a new day in Germany."
"The people are ready for change no matter what names you call them," he said on X.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk was among the first to celebrate AfD's victory with a resounding "Well done!" in response to a post from AfD's co-leader Alice Weidel.
Ulrich Siegmund, the 35-year-old lead candidate for AfD in Saxony-Anhalt state, thanked Musk for his support and said he would "welcome the opportunity for strong and constructive cooperation."
Musk has been a longtime supporter of the AfD, having previously described it as "the best hope for the future of Germany" before the federal elections in February 2025.
