Washington DC - A new report found that President Donald Trump's administration wasted millions in federal dollars on their aggressive deportation agenda and expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities.

On Thursday, the Government Accountability Office sent the report on its extensive investigation, which found that ICE wasted over $20 million on six initiatives to transform warehouses across the country into detention centers.

As part of Trump's flagship Big, Beautiful Bill, ICE "started new detention initiatives before developing a plan for expansion, resulting in waste."

"In the absence of a comprehensive strategic plan to guide detention expansion, ICE has wasted funds on unsuccessful detention initiatives and lacks important information about the long-term affordability of its investments," the office wrote.

Earlier this year, ICE spent $1.07 billion to purchase 11 facilities. They are now seeking to sell seven of them and may lose more money if they are not able to make back at least $707 million.

ICE is also reimbursing Florida for costs racked up from two detention centers set up in the state – including the infamous Alligator Alcatraz – at 171% higher than their median rate.

The investigation came at the request of Democratic Senators Jack Reed, Gary Peters, and Dick Durbin, and Representative Bennie Thompson.

In an X post, Durban wrote, "Remember when Donald Trump promised to get rid of 'waste, fraud, and abuse' in Washington? Well, GAO continues to uncover incompetence and waste at the highest levels of ICE.

"Americans are outraged at ill-conceived immigration detention projects, and it's time to hold DHS and ICE responsible," he added.
