Washington DC - Following the resignation of David Warrington – a close MAGA ally – as the White House's top legal adviser, President Donald Trump is promoting Will Scharf to the senior position.

"It is my Great Honor to announce that, effective September 1st, Will Scharf will become Assistant to the President and White House Counsel," Trump announced in a Truth Social post on Sunday.

He said David Warrington, a key MAGA ally and the man Scharf is replacing, "has done a truly outstanding job as White House Counsel and, before that, for my Presidential Campaign."

Warrington served as one of Trump's closest advisers and is believed to have played a significant role in the president's decision to go to war with Iran. Trump said he is planning on a return to the private sector.

According to a New York Times report from September, Warrington has been crucial for providing the legal justification for some of Trump's more controversial decisions – including the activation of emergency powers and the deployment of troops to US cities.

"He's the one that makes the ultimate decisions," Warrington told the Times last year, referring to Trump. "Whether I have a personal view… unless asked for it, I don't give it."

In Warrington's place, Trump is installing Scharf, who has served as White House Staff Secretary since the beginning of the current administration. In that role, he has managed and organized executive orders and advised the president.

Scharf has also served as the chair of the National Capital Planning Commission, where he has overseen Trump's numerous construction side-projects – including the notorious White House Ballroom.

"I know Will well!" Trump wrote. "Will is Tough, Strong, and Smart! He also loves our Country, and respects the Law. Will Scharf will do a great job as White House Counsel!"
