On Monday the president shared a post on Truth Social calling for the change to take affect "immediately."

" We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America! The name would add great value and prestige to the State!" Trump wrote.

Trump went on to claim it would raise "home values and incomes," and that citizens will be "even prouder" to salute the US flag.

He also took shots at the state, insisting they hold "crooked elections," a false claim he has been pushing since he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden.

The president first appeared to suggest the name change last month when he shared 34 Truth Social posts in the span of only an hour, one of which simply included a photo of the state on a map with the term Mexico crossed out, and America written in its place.

In his second term, Trump has pushed a number of unofficial name changes, including changing Lake Ontario to "Lake America" and the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America."

In response to Trump's latest post, New Mexico Senator Ben Ray Luján argued the state's name predates the US, and carries "generations of history, culture, and rich traditions that continue to shape who we are."

"We are New Mexicans. We're proud of our name, proud of our home, and we're keeping both. Long after Donald Trump is out of office, we'll still be New Mexico," Luján added.
