Washington DC - President Donald Trump on Monday blamed Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries for high gas prices, insisting that the Iran war was no longer responsible.
"What's driving up Gasoline is no longer the Strait of Hormuz, because Record Numbers of Barrels are coming out now on an almost daily basis, but the word, 'Refineries,' where Russia's are being blown up by Ukraine," Trump said on his Truth Social network.
Trump, whose Republican Party faces losing control of Congress in next month's midterm elections, also blamed what he said was the closing of oil refineries in states run by rival Democrats.
In late September, Trump failed to acknowledge rising gas prices since taking office and bizarrely claimed that the price of gas and groceries, among other things, are cheaper in his second term than they were under the Biden administration.
AAA reports that the price of regular gas is currently $4.36 a gallon, and diesel is averaging at $6.32 per gallon.
According to PolitiFact, gas prices under Biden peaked at $5.00 in June 2022, caused mainly by increased demand as the economy recovered from disruptions wrought by the coronavirus pandemic. The prices quickly fell back down, reaching $3.20 by the end of the year.
