Austin, Texas - Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania recently defended his identity as a Democrat, but appeared to express a bit of doubt about his political future as the midterms loom.

On Saturday, while taking questions during the closing keynote at the Texas Tribune Festival, Fetterman was asked if he'd be the "51st Democrat" if the party manages to take back the majority.

Fetterman acknowledged that it was "entirely possible," but seemed to leave open the possibility that he may not be the 51st.

"Let's revisit after the midterms, and let's see what happens, you know, if I happen to be 51. I don't know," Fetterman said.

In recent months, the senator has gained the ire of voters and colleagues by constantly defending President Donald Trump and Republicans, while voting against his own party's interests.

Most notably, Fetterman is a staunch defender of Israel and a supporter of Trump's unpopular war with Iran. Both positions conflict with the majority of Democratic voters.

Earlier this month, Fetterman delivered a video message during a GOP convention, in which he insisted he was a "commonsense Democrat" who rejects "the extremes and socialism and that anti way of life."

His defiance has garnered calls for him to step down, but he has adamantly refused, insisting he is, and will always be, a Democrat.

During Saturday's event, he was repeatedly pressed on whether he would ever switch parties, to which he insisted he has "no reason to."

At one moment, when asked, "Why not become an Independent?" Fetterman slipped up, responding, "I'm a lifelong Republican," garnering laughs from the audience.

In November, Republicans will desperately fight to maintain their majority. But if Democrats manage to win, many have vowed to support efforts to impeach Trump for a third time for many offenses he has committed during his second term.

It's unclear if Fetterman will support his party on such efforts, or others he stands in opposition to, such as cutting funds to Israel or moving to stop the Iran war.
