Newsom demands 25th Amendment invocation over Trump's shocking comments

Sacramento, California - California Governor Gavin Newsom called on Congress to invoke the US Constitution's 25th Amendment over President Donald Trump's recent comments inviting attacks on Los Angeles and San Diego.

Speaking to the Hill, Newsom declared that Trump is "mentally ill," condemned his recent comments suggesting he'd allow Iran to nuke Los Angeles and San Diego, and insisted that it's "TIME FOR THE 25TH!"

It was the latest comment from the California governor, who has launched a lengthy social media and press campaign to attack Trump's claim that the nuclear obliteration of Californian cities "is a very small price to pay."

"An American president is talking about Los Angeles and San Diego being 'taken out,'" Newsom pointed out in one of many social media posts over the last 24 hours. "Where the hell is Congress? This is dangerous. The time to stand up is NOW."

Newsom's reference to the 25th Amendment, however, is particularly frank – such an invocation could potentially see Trump removed from office.

The 25th Amendment allows for the President to be removed in the case of death or an inability to exercise their responsibilities. If successful, an invocation would see Vice President JD Vance ascend to the top job.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker backed up Newsom's suggestion, sharing Trump's comments on X and declaring: "25th Amendment now."

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle responded to the controversy by declaring that Newsom "is the worst governor in America, and he also may be the dumbest."

Trump has also been condemned by Republican Jim Desmond, who is running for a San Diego-area House district.

"No American city is expendable," Desmond wrote on social media. "And no American family should ever be treated as collateral damage."
