Sacramento, California - California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed "disgust" over President Donald Trump's treatment of Canada and declared that he's "absolutely" convinced talks will restart soon.
During an interview with CBC, Newsom said he expects Trump will return to the negotiating table with Ottawa within weeks, if not days, due to the pressure he's experiencing from the Republican Party.
"He's getting crushed," Newsom told CBC News Chief Political Correspondent Rosemary Barton. "He's getting hammered by his own party right now."
"I absolutely believe within a matter of days, I can't imagine more than two, three weeks, he'll be back at the table," Newsom said.
Newsom's comments came days after Ottawa walked away from a proposed trade deal with Washington, with Prime Minister Mark Carney claiming it would have been "uneconomic, unfair… and called into question the reliability of any deal."
"In short, they asked too much, and they offered too little," Carney said. "We cannot accept what they've offered, and we will not give what they've asked… You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked."
Trump responded to Ottawa's refusal by slamming Canada with 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of goods – about 5.5% of exports. On Tuesday, Ottawa retaliated with tit-for-tat duties on US goods which ranged from 15% to 50%.
"We do not in any way, shape, or form condone the behavior of this president as it relates to how he's treated you," Newsom told Barton, declaring that he's "disgusted by the invasive species in the White House, Donald Trump."
Newsom went on to praise Carney's "strength, clarity conviction," explaining that "Trump respects strength, he does not respect weakness." He said he believes Carney is "playing this well."
"He's a T-Rex, Trump. He's a guy who does one of two things: You either mate with him, forgive me, or he devours you."
