New York, New York - Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting between Lavrov and Rubio, which was announced by the State Department of Tuesday, will take place the same day that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will address the United Nations General Assembly.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Ukrainian leader told journalists he is ready to halt strikes on Russian energy sites if Moscow also agrees to do so.

But Zelensky said he did not know Moscow's position, and expressed hope the "American side will find a way… to bring them to any kind of negotiations."

War has continued to rage since Russia launched its all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In recent months violence has once again escalated, Russia and Ukraine both engaging in intensifying long-range strikes against one another.

The result has been attacks against dozens of civilian sites, including factories, warehouses, and energy and port infrastructure. Ships have also been hit in the Black Sea.

Meanwhile, attempts by President Donald Trump's administration to negotiate an end to the conflict has completely failed to yield a result.

Rubio last met with Lavrov in July on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila. During the meeting, the two leaders focused on the issues surrounding Ukraine, the senior Russian official insisting the US cease its arms deliveries to the embattled nation.

According to a statement released by the Russian foreign ministry at the time, Lavrov "stressed [to Rubio] that it was unacceptable to continue supplying weapons to the Kyiv regime."

He also condemned "a destabilizing policy by European countries, which are still seeking to inflict a 'strategic defeat' on Russia" and stressed that Moscow is ready for a "political-diplomatic resolution to the conflict."
