Susan Collins facing stiff opposition as Planned Parenthood goes on the attack in Maine
Augusta, Maine - Planned Parenthood on Monday announced a massive new attack ad campaign against Maine Senator Susan Collins set to be worth a total of more than $600,000.
The massive ad buy, first reported on by the Washington Post, is the largest investment by Planned Parenthood's political action committee for this electoral cycle – according to federal records.
It will primarily focus on hammering Collins on her decision to vote for the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh in 2018.
Despite assurances from Collins that he wouldn't go on to dismantle abortion protections across the country, Kavanaugh voted for the overturning of Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022.
Since the ruling was overturned, numerous GOP-run states have introduced harsh and restrictive abortion laws which have been widely condemned by rights groups.
One YouTube ad already published by Planned Parenthood shows a woman – identified only as Sarah – who says she had voted for Collins in the past but now deeply regrets her decision.
"I can't take my vote back, but I will not make the same mistake twice," she said. "I'm done hoping Susan Collins will do the right thing."
Collins campaign spokesperson Blake Kernen on Monday criticized the Planned Parenthood ad buy, accusing the organization of caring "more about electing Democrats than any issue."
Troy Jackson, Collins' Democratic opponent in the November midterms, has repeatedly criticized her for voting for Kavanaugh's appointment, even prior to Planned Parenthood's involvement.
"Instead of fighting for Maine, Susan Collins has destroyed Roe v. Wade, recklessly funded ICE, threatened rural hospitals, raised gas prices, propped up Big Pharma, and helped slash Medicaid," Jackson posted to X on Saturday.
"Maine deserves a senator who actually gives a damn about the working people in this country."
