Austin, Texas - Texas' Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has been ousted as Vikki Goodwin claimed victory in their race – part of a blue wave that hit the Lone Star State this midterm cycle.
The Associated Press called the race for Goodwin, showing her with 51.9% of the vote to Patrick's 45.5%, with 96% of ballots counted.
Currently a state representative, Goodwin is now set to become the first Democratic lieutenant governor in Texas in 27 years.
Patrick has been in the position since 2015.
Goodwin's win came as Democrat Gina Hinojosa stunned three-term Republican incumbent Greg Abbott in the Texas governor's race.
Democrat James Talarico also won a major race on Tuesday, defeating the state's Attorney General Ken Paxton for US Senate.
On top of that, Democrats Nathan Johnson, Clayton Tucker, and Jon Rosenthal claimed victory in the races for Texas attorney general, agriculture commissioner, and railroad commissioner, respectively.
"Congratulations to James Talarico, Clayton Tucker, and Vikki Goodwin on their victories in this historic Texas election!" Hinojosa posted on X.
"Tonight, we made history. The movement showed up, the people made their voices heard, and the Texas Blue Wave arrived."
