New York, New York - New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani responded after House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested the nation is being taken over by clones of the progressive Democrat.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Mamdani was asked about an X post Johnson shared earlier that day warning "radical Marxist Democrats" are destroying the country and calling on his fellow MAGA followers to "take a stand and fight to protect the greatest nation in the history of the world from being overrun by mini-Mamdanis."

In response, Mamdani said Johnson was likely referring to Abdul El-Sayed, another popular progressive, winning the Democratic primary for Senate in Michigan on Tuesday.

Mamdani praised El-Sayed for having run a campaign focused on "money out of politics, money in your pocket, Medicare for All" – values that align with the mayor's affordability agenda.

"If those simple commitments and beliefs are what drive Representative Johnson to these kinds of conclusions, I think it shows you how deeply out of touch the Republican Party is with the concerns of working-class Americans," Mamdani argued.

"Because what we have seen is that, despite him facing more than $60 million in outside spending, [El-Sayed] was able to prevail with a focus on the cost-of-living crisis and the way in which health care is exceedingly out of reach for those who have helped make this country what it is," he added.

Johnson's post comes as the Republican Party is fighting to maintain their majorities in the House and the Senate in the upcoming November midterms.

In recent months, President Donald Trump and other MAGA Republicans have been aggressively pushing a narrative akin to the Red Scare, in which they insist the Democratic Party is being taken over by communists posing as socialists, claiming that electing them will help further their aims to destroy the country.

Republicans losing their majorities will make it difficult for the GOP to pass legislation over the next two years, and Democrats could seek to impeach President Trump for a third time.
