Washington DC - Recent government documents have revealed that former Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino was being investigated shortly before he abruptly resigned from his role.
According to documents obtained by The Chicago Tribune, officials with the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Professional Standards launched an investigation into Bovino on March 2 over allegations of misconduct during Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago and Minneapolis.
Investigators probed allegations that Bovino "lied multiple times" about how he and other officers were hit in the head with rocks during an incident in which they shot protesters with tear gas.
He was also pressed about an antisemitic comment he reportedly made during a conference call. When he was told an assistant US Attorney would not make the scheduled call due to the Sabbath, Bovino allegedly joked, "Do Orthodox criminals also take off Saturday?"
The report comes after President Donald Trump sent Bovino and federal agents to Democratic-run cities across the country to carry out aggressive deportation sweeps.
Their presence was met with massive protests, and their aggressive tactics have resulted in multiple US citizens and immigrants being shot, with at least four instances being fatal.
Bovino regularly faced backlash over his leadership and unapologetic responses to the shootings. He ultimately retired in March, two weeks after the investigation was filed.
He has since tried to cling to relevance by staying active on social media and threatening to go rogue with his own deportation efforts.
In a recent interview, Bovino claimed he was actually fired from his role and said he now believes the Trump administration "want me dead."
