Atlanta, Georgia - Democratic Senator for Georgia Jon Ossoff used a campaign appearance on Tuesday to blast President Donald Trump, whom he labeled a "draft-dodging, crook president."
Standing alongside Mark Kelly and his wife Gabrielle Giffords, Ossoff defended the beleaguered Arizona senator, who has been under constant attacks from Trump and his administration for months on end.
In November, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's Pentagon had threatened to call Kelly back into active service to face court martial after the senator suggested that troops can refuse to carry out illegal orders.
Trump had taken the matter a step further, writing on social media: "This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP"
"I don't think anything illustrates the times more aptly than that the draft-dodging, crook president, who has plunged our nation recklessly into a war he knows not how to end or to win, [and] tried to imprison this man who embodies American heroism," Ossoff told the assembled crowd.
Ossoff is currently running for reelection to his Senate seat in Georgia, where he is being challenged by Republican congressman Mike Collins.
On Sunday, the presidential-hopeful triggered controversy by making a reference to Trump's executive assistant, Natalie Harp, during comments criticizing the war with Iran and the conditions of US soldiers aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.
"While the sailors on the Lincoln fight his war, while he fruitlessly drains our munitions and oil reserves, the president sleeps through his meetings," Ossoff said on Sunday.
"He golfs and trades stocks. See, he doesn't want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the Amir of Qatar."
