Washington DC - The State Department on Friday announced it will work with Congress to approve a massive $1 billion assistance package for Colombia as the country's new far-right president takes office.

"The United States, working with Congress, intends to announce $1 billion in assistance as part of a security package to support President de la Espriella's Administration in achieving our shared goals," the State Department wrote in a press release published to its website.

"Building on more than 200 years of friendship, the Trump Administration looks forward to working closely with the new administration to ensure security and prosperity for the United States, Colombia, and our hemisphere," it continued.

In the statement, the US set out two key goals for its relationship with Colombia now that de la Espriella – who was inaugurated on Friday – is in office.

Notably, Colombia will work closely with the Trump administration on its Shield of the Americas initiative, which seeks to stamp out drug trafficking and cross-border organized crime networks.

Trump "stands ready to support the de la Espriella Administration’s efforts to defeat the vicious narcoterrorist and criminal organizations that threaten US, Colombian, and hemispheric security and economic prosperity," the statement declared.

The US will also work to unlock economic growth in Colombia by contributing relief funds and humanitarian aid packages to help the country's communities, assist in strengthening small and medium-sized businesses, and modernize the country's infrastructure.

President Donald Trump publicly endorsed de la Espriella during the campaign and attacked his opponent, then-incumbent left-wing President Gustavo Petro. De la Espriella went on to win only a narrow victory against Petro.

"I will be the President of all," de la Espriella on Friday wrote in a post to X. "I will govern with principles, respecting the institutions, traveling the regions, and defending democracy and freedom."
