Texas man makes shocking cute critter discovery under his home: "Mama's got the team on her back"
Dallas, Texas – A Texas man was shocked to see a massive hole underneath his home! To find out who or what pesky animal was responsible, he set up a night‑vision camera, which generated surprising results!
Ian Smith has already gotten to know all sorts of animals in his garden. However, the strange hole under his home was something he couldn't identify. "That’s too big to be a rat," he said in an Instagram video, also reported by The Dodo.
Because the uncertainty of what was living beneath his house kept him awake, Smith eventually set up a night‑vision camera nearby – and waited.
By the next day he had his answer: the camera had indeed captured an animal at night, but in a far more surprising way than the Texan expected.
Smith watched a female opossum carry 10 tiny offspring on her back toward the hole. “had never seen a healthy family that large in real life,” he said enthusiastically.
“I expected to see an opossum,” Smith said. “But not 80 opossums. Mama’s got the team on her back.”

What was especially impressive was how the mother managed to carry all ten of her babies on her back without any of the young ones falling off.
"I was thrilled. I replayed the footage 100 times," he said.
By the way, Smith has no intention of evicting his new “tenants.” Since he knows opossums aren’t destructive rodents and the mother was simply looking for a safe shelter for herself and her offspring, he'll allow the rodent family to continue living under his home.
"They are generally nomadic animals, so they often hunker down in a safe place to raise babies; then when the babies are old enough, they go on another adventure," he said.
He was right, too. A few months after the discovery, the opossum family moved out.
However, a couple of the juveniles stayed near Smith’s garden and occasionally make an appearance. The garden owner named one of the opossums “Pinky.”
