Biscoe, North Carolina – This woman who bought a used camera got a downright quirky moment for free! On the camera's full memory card, Haylee Davis discovered a strange photo that left her speechless.
As Davis recounted in a conversation with Newsweek, she had been bargain‑hunting at an estate sale in North Carolina last month.
She was thrilled to find a digital camera for just $10. To her surprise, the memory card inside contained eight gigabytes of photos.
The 23‑year‑old dutifully scrolled through the images and could hardly believe her eyes when she spotted herself in one of them: her fourth-grade class photo!
"I obviously wasn’t expecting to find anything like that, especially a picture of myself from almost 15 years ago,” Davis said.
“I got chills and was shocked. I think what hit me the most was seeing that little version of myself at a time when I had no idea what life was going to look like. Seeing 9-year-old me again felt like an unexpected reminder of who I was before all the stress and self-doubt," she added.
But who took the photo?
As Davis quickly discovered, the camera had belonged to a 36-year-old man named Ryan Houser from North Carolina. He had visited her class back in the day to give a talk about the Appalachian Trail, which is when the class photo was taken.
Davis promptly got in touch with the 36‑year‑old to return the memory card.
"That physical SD card was carried with me for four months while hiking the Appalachian Trail, a winter spent living in Telluride, Colorado, a cross-country road trip to Burning Man, and through the last semester or so of college. Naturally, looking through the photos brings me a wave of nostalgia,” Houser said.
"Beyond the crazy coincidence, I’m grateful for what that picture meant to me personally," Houser said.
"I’ve been going through a lot of anxiety and self-doubt about what comes next, and seeing that little girl again reminded me of the person I was before I started worrying so much about having everything figured out. She was creative, excited about life, and had the whole world ahead of her. I think I needed that reminder more than I realized," he added.
