Ottawa, Canada - A new poll reveals the percentage of Canadians who see US as an enemy country amid Donald Trump's ongoing trade war.
Survey data released by Leger on Saturday shows that 41% of Canadians consider the US an enemy country. The result was up 15 points from June, the polling firm noted.
Only 22% of people surveyed said they consider the US an ally.
The high percentage of Canadians with unfavorable views of the US appears to be closely tied with Donald Trump's leadership, as 64% of respondents said their impression would change if he were no longer president.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has targeted Canada with tariffs and repeatedly threatened to make the country the US' "51st state."
The suggestion is overwhelmingly unpopular with Canadians: 85% of survey respondents said they did not want their country to become part of the US.
Survey participants identified inflation and the rising cost of living as Canada's top issue (35%), followed by US tariffs and aggression (24%). Many anticipate they will be affected personally by Trump's trade policies, with nearly two-thirds expecting to feel a major or moderate impact.
Ottawa has responded to the Trump administration's actions with retaliatory tariffs, while many Canadians have participated in a boycott of American goods.
The strategy seems to have broad support among the Canadian public, with 74% of people surveyed saying they agree with their government's decision to impose new tariffs on certain US products.
