Russia, France slam Houthis deadly "heinous attack" on Riyadh airport as Trump weighs in
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - Russia on Sunday condemned the deadly attack by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis on Riyadh airport, saying that hostilities needed to end "through political and diplomatic means," as France echoed similar sentiments. President Donald Trump chimed in on where the US stands, too.
"Russia condemns this attack and calls upon the parties to conflicts in the Arabian Peninsula region to completely refrain from striking civilian infrastructure," the Russian foreign ministry said.
France on Sunday condemned what it called a "heinous attack" by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis a day earlier on Riyadh's international airport and stressed "total solidarity" with Saudi Arabia.
France, which is already lending troops and military equipment to Saudi Arabia, "will continue to remain by its side in its defense of its territory and its infrastructure," a foreign ministry statement said, calling on the Houthis to cease their attacks.
Turkey's leaders also chimed in, slamming the "deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure and innocent civilians."
The attack was "a flagrant violation of international law", Turkey's foreign ministry said in a statement. It called for "actions threatening regional security and stability" to stop immediately. The attack on Saturday on the Riyadh airport killed 12 people and wounded hundreds.
The French foreign ministry said a French woman was among those hurt.
French President Emmanuel Macron on September 24 announced that his country was sending French troops, radar units and defence systems to Saudi Arabia, as it confronts repeated Houthi missile and drone attacks.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, days after Macron's announcement, termed the assistance "strictly defensive" and said it did not mean that Paris was becoming a partner in the Saudi war against the Houthis.
President Donald Trump, on the other hand, teased that the US may join the Saudi-backed strikes.
On Saturday, Trump told reporters the US is considering joining Saudi stikes on Iran-backed Houthis, saying, "We may. We're going to look at it. We just found out about the recent attack, so we'll make a decision," Trump told reporters at the White House. "We move very quickly."
