On Wednesday morning, TMZ reported that the dancer and TV star died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Boss's wife of nine years, Allison Holker, confirmed her husband's passing in a statement to PEOPLE.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to share my husband Stephen has left us," she said. "Stephen lit up every room he stepped into. He valued family, friends and community above all else and leading with love and light was everything to him."

Boss rose to fame as the runner-up of So You Think You Can Dance in 2008, later participating as an All-Star and as a judge in 2022.

In 2014, he joined The Ellen DeGeneres Show as a guest DJ and eventually became a permanent staple of the long-running TV show. He became an executive producer in 2020 and stayed with the series until it concluded earlier this year.

Boss and Holker, who is also a dancer, married in 2013 and celebrated their ninth anniversary just a few days ago. The couple frequently shared dancing videos on social media, many of which feature their three children, Weslie, Maddox, and Zaia.

"To say he left a legacy would be an understatement, and his positive impact will continue to be felt," Holker told PEOPLE. "I am certain there won't be a day that goes by that we won't honor his memory. We ask for privacy during this difficult time for myself and especially for our three children."

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner confirmed to PEOPLE that Boss's death is pending additional investigation.
