Margot Robbie dishes on Babylon's scantily clad debauchery

Los Angeles, California - The highly anticipated movie Babylon by director Damien Chazelle hits theaters soon, and the historical drama with a prominent cast tells of old Hollywood tales while showing a lot of skin. So much that lead actor Margot Robbie wondered whether the scenes could be shown at all.

Robbie and fellow actor Carey Mulligan sat down for a chat amongst others in Hollywood for the current issue of Variety.

Robbie's upcoming film Babylon, which features Brad Pitt and Tobey Maguire amongst others, quickly came up for discussion. The three-hour film has it all: parties, drugs, and sex as Hollywood's golden era is illuminated in all its glory and all its shame.

"The whole opening sequence is this enormously debauched, crazy, wild party. And there’s lots of people wearing very little or nothing." said Mulligan, who had already seen the film.

Robbie herself was even more explicit: "It’s pretty much a party/orgy. It kind of turns into an orgy," she recounted.

The scene must have been so excessive, as Robbie eventually wondered, "Are we even allowed to show that?" while filming.

Actors push the limits in Babylon

The two actors joked about watching the scandalous film with your parents. After all, who wouldn't love to slide down awkwardly in the seat next to their parents in the movie theater while an elaborate orgy is taking place on the big screen?

The film, set between 1925 and 1952, is as if like "La Dolce Vita and Wolf of Wall Street had a baby," Robbie summarized. In the film, she plays aspiring actor Nellie LaRoy, a character that's inspired by Clara Bow (1905-1965), perhaps the dream factory's first "it" girl.

Robbie had also recently stressed to The Sun the special nature of Babylon: "There's a dizzying amount of debauchery." She added, "One of the most disturbing, chaotic scenes I’ve ever witnessed is in this film, and it involves a fight with a snake."

Babylon hits US theaters on December 23.
