Epic Games gets its song and dance on with Bandcamp buyout

Cary, North Carolina - After Epic Games announced it was gearing up to make movies, the logical next step is to slide into the music industry.

Epic Games released an official statement Wednesday to let the world know it bought Bandcamp, a marketplace and platform for independent musicians and their communities.

"Epic and Bandcamp share a mission of building the most artist friendly platform that enables creators to keep the majority of their hard-earned money."

The sentiment was echoed by Bandcamp CEO and co-founder Ethan Diamond in a blog post.

Diamond said that even though other companies had tried to buy his platform in the past, only Epic "strongly believed in our mission, were aligned with our values, and not only wanted to see Bandcamp continue, but also wanted to provide the resources to bring a lot more benefit to the artists, labels, and fans who use the site."

Bandcamp won't be completely absorbed into Epic Games, and will keep its current structure and Diamond as CEO. Much like game developers on the Epic Games Store, artists on Bandcamp will benefit from the new parent company's investments.

Epic Games is looking to grow to an international level, and improve apps, album webpages, monetization, payment features, and more.

This is just the newest tentacle of Epic Games transformation to become a giant media octopus, after the company announced in October that it snagged pedigreed Lucasfilm's execs who worked on the Star Wars franchise.

The new Bandcamp tentacle of Epic's empire also ups the chances for crossovers with titles like Fortnite, because now Epic Games has an in-house movie production team, and a direct line to up-and-coming musicians.

Now that the Epic Games' Entertainment tentacle is growing, it makes sense to extend into the music industry, too.
