Game Awards 2021: Family fun takes the number one spot

Los Angeles, California - The game of the year isn't about shooting people, and it isn't about epic space empires. It's about making a relationship work. Wow, bet you didn't see that coming!

The Game Awards was a night to remember, especially for Hazelight Studios, the developer of platform adventure It Takes Two, which took home the prize for 2021's Game of the Year.

The December 9 awards ceremony put the spotlight on a heartwarming tale of teamwork.

It Takes Two was so good, it didn't just win first place in one category; it also won the award for Best Family Game and Best Multiplayer.

The charming journey in Kena: Bridge of Spirits dominated the Indie genre, and developer Ember Lab landed both Best Indie Game and Best Debut Indie Game with a gorgeous and creative take on the action/adventure formula.

Forza Horizon 5, from Playground Games, was declared the very best Sports and Racing game, but it also showed up the competition as a surprising winner for Best Audio Design and Innovation in Accessibility.

Developer Arkane Studio's Deathloop, which is one of the few winners that is all about shooting people, walked away with the awards for Best Game Direction and Best Art Direction. It received the most nominations of any game this year.

The biggest upset of the night was Psychonauts 2, which had three good shots at winning an award. But developer Double Fine's mind-bending adventure was truly snubbed, because despite five nominations, the game didn't get a single award.

Finally, there's the Player's Choice Award, which went to Halo: Infinite. Players are still so happy about an excellent start to the free multiplayer beta, and one of the most fun Halo campaign experiences to date.

Every year at the Game Awards, the newest trailers for upcoming games make gamers wish they could turn fast-forward to the release dates.

Wonder Woman, Star Wars, and Sonic the Hedgehog are among the biggest upcoming games that were revealed at the awards.

The Wonder Woman reveal trailer is pretty bare bones at this point, so you can expect more announcements and trailers to start to flesh out how the DC universe's Amazon hero will finally star in a game more than 80 years after she first graced a comic book back in 1941. The upcoming Wonder Woman game has no official release date yet.

The reveal for the Star Wars game felt more like a movie trailer. It also showed a few important things about what developer Qantic Dream might include, like Jedi Master Yoda, and some well-known settings like the planets of Kashyyyk and Coruscant. Star Wars: Eclipse does not yet have an official release date.

Sonic, the speedster hedgehog, is getting his own open-world game called Sonic Frontiers. The trailer makes it look like the swiftest hedgehog in town will have plenty of room to stretch his legs, which could work really well as long as developer Sega focuses on building an open arena for you to scoot around in. The game is scheduled for late 2022, but don't hold your breath, as big game releases have a tendency to get delayed these days.

The winner of the Game of the Year award, It Takes Two, is a shining example of what the industry could do more of: making games about connecting with someone else, instead of more brutal gorefests.
