Evans told dpa, "It's definitely very crazy. It was a huge surprise."

Evans didn't just score a viral hit on TikTok with his cover version of the old sailor song Wellerman. He also conquered the official British charts.

"The song is just something for everyone to smile about," Evans said.

Especially in the current lockdown, where everyone was sitting at home, it worked perfectly, he said, and everyone can sing along.

Thanks to his surprise success, Evans was offered a record deal. The freshly signed musician quickly quit his day job as a mail carrier to pursue his music full time.

But the singer didn't reveal if his first album will be full of sea shanties or something else.

On TikTok, Evans has shared some of his other ventures into different genres. There is even a video of him rapping.

Now that Evans is a full-time musician, he said he does miss all the running around he did outside at his former day job: "I usually don't do sports – so that did me some good."
