The Price of Glee trailer offers sensationalistic take on cast tragedies

New York, New York - A new trailer for an upcoming Glee docuseries has sparked backlash from former Glee stars due to its clear intent of sensationalizing real-life tragedies and perpetuating deeply insensitive narratives about them.

The three-part TV show that's due in 2023 is set to feature members of Glee's crew as well as relatives and friends of select cast members, but the cast members themselves refused the invitation to appear.

The trailer for The Price of Glee immediately highlights the tragic death of lead actor Cory Monteith, who passed away from an overdose in 2013.

The sensationalistic language comes in hot with on-screen text that reads like a tagline of a bad horror movie.

"In May 2009, 10 young actors made their TV debut on Glee," the text reads. "By 2020, all of them would be famous. And three of them would be dead."

Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez on the show, tragically drowned in 2020 while swimming with her young son. Another Glee alum, Mark Salling, died by suicide in 2018 while awaiting sentencing for child pornography charges.

Despite two of the deaths having occurred after Glee was off the air, the trailer attempts to create a narrative that the show somehow contributed to each of them. As many fans have pointed out, equating the tragic deaths of Monteith and Rivera to the circumstances that surrounded Salling's death is also deeply disturbing.

The language in the trailer indicates the show's intention may be providing undue legitimacy to harmful conspiracy theories and speculation surrounding the deaths of the Glee alumni.

Though the crew members and other individuals featured in the docuseries are likely not fabricating their sides of the story, it ultimately may not matter.

While many may never bother to tune into the docuseries, the trailer circulating on social media is enough to provide fuel to spread the insensitive and disturbing myth of a "curse" even further.

Several former Glee stars have spoken out about their disapproval of the docuseries.

Kevin McHale slammed a fan's claim that the series included both cast and crew members, asking them to "show me this 'cast' you speak of" and followed his initial response with a firm statement: "Don't make me speak on this again."

Chord Overstreet bluntly called the docuseries "bulls**t" when asked about it on The Elvis Duran Show in November.

While some cast members couldn't escape questions about it in public interviews, perhaps the best route to take when asked the uncomfortable questions was exemplified by Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel on Glee. He didn't directly acknowledge the docuseries but simply said he doesn't want to relive the "painful memories."

As controversy and coverage of cast member responses continues to increase, The Price of Glee will ultimately draw more and more eyes, and the best move for the show's stars moving forward may simply be to not acknowledge it any further.
