According to a statement that a spokesperson for UC Berkeley shared with ABC News, the remains were found on January 10 in the Clark Kerr Campus building, located about a mile from the main campus.

The discovery was made "in a building which has not been occupied for many years."

The University of Berkeley's police department is investigating the matter and has said there are no outstanding cases of missing persons within the college's community.

"Although the remains are skeletonized, it is not clear how many years they have been there," the university said in the statement.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office has also opened an investigation, and will hopefully determine the cause of death and the identity of the victim.

"We understand that there are many questions, and we anticipate that the coroner's report will provide additional information," the university spokesperson added. "We do not anticipate this investigation will disrupt resident activities at the Clark Kerr Campus."

Hopefully, the campus' police department investigation will uncover something, but as of now, the story of how the skeleton got there remains a mystery.
