According to The New York Times, the suspect was taken into custody on Monday on charges unrelated to the shootings.

But law enforcement officers allegedly seized a weapon that has been linked back to at least one.

"We are still trying to link and see which cases are related, and which cases are not related," explained Chief of Police Harold Medina during a news conference.

Medina did not reveal the charges the suspect was arrested for, or if they would be charged with any crimes in relation to the shootings.

The shootings reportedly began on January 4, with Bernalillo County Commissioner Adriann Barboa's home being the first target.

A week later, over a dozen shots were fired at the home of former commissioner Debbie O’Malley.

On January 3, eights shots were fired at the home of state senator Linda Lopez, and on January 5, three shots were fired into the office of state senator Moe Maestas.

A motive for the current suspect hasn't been revealed. Medina says officials have an idea, but refused to share it as to not compromise the investigation
