Wanda Palmer was covered in blood when her neighbors found her on her couch in Cottageville, West Virginia, back in June 2020. At the time, Sheriff Ross Mellinger told the TV station WCHS that she was "circling the drain medically [with] massive amounts of head trauma."

According to authorities, Palmer was attacked with either a machete or hatchet in her home. Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellenger said that she was "attacked, hacked, and left for dead," NPR reported.

The West Virginia woman fell in to a coma. Mellenger told Metro News, "The keys to the whole thing lay with the victim herself and with her unable to communicate we were left with nothing." Law enforcement officers didn't find the weapon or the assailant in 2020.

But in late June 2022, Palmer finally began to emerge from her coma. She was able to tell a deputy what they needed to bust the case wide open: the name of her attacker.

The perpetrator was close to the victim

Wanda Palmer identified her assailant as her brother Daniel Palmer.

Mellenger said, "Now low and behold two years later and boom, she’s awake and able to tell us exactly what happened."

Daniel Palmer was arrested on Friday.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department shared the news of his arrest on Facebook and wrote that the 55-year-old was being charged with attempted murder and malicious wounding. He is currently being held at South Central Regional Jail and Correctional Facility. His bail has been set at $500,000.

Mellinger said that the authorities were already aware of the brother and that Daniel Palmer was a suspect back in 2020 because of a "previous violent history" between the siblings.
