The 20-year-old athlete had attended Longhorns games practically since birth, with his proud alum parents decking out their infant and his older brother in burnt orange every chance they got.

When it came time to pick schools, there was no question for the boys, and Jake's older brother Sam became one of UT's most legendary quarterbacks, and considered Jake his number one fan.

But football meant more to the family than a tradition; the Ehlingers' relationship to the sport, and with the school verged on holy. Their family and their community attributed their connection and passion on the field to their father Ross, a proud Longhorn and athlete who died suddenly of a heart attack in the San Francisco Bay eight years ago while participating in a triathlon.

Talent on the field was shared pretty evenly between the two brothers, and Jake was a preferred walk-on in 2019. He had finally joined his brother on the team.

Sports were a family affair

It was when Jake joined his brother that their mother, Jena Ehlinger, told her sons, "I want y'all to take a moment, stop, look up in the sky and tell God and Dad thank you,” she said. "That you have the opportunity to play football together at the University of Texas, your dream school, both of you."

Both brothers were enrolled in UT's McCombs School of Business. Jake took his studies seriously and was twice named to the Big 12 Commissioner's honor roll. His efforts on and off the field were an example to his younger sister Morgan, who was part of a national title winning high school cheerleading squad.

As a linebacker, Jake had not yet played a game for the team in the last two seasons according to University of Texas Football news hub, Hook'em.

Police have not yet shared a cause of death but have said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the case, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
