Who is the best men's college basketball team in the nation?

West Lafayette, Indiana - After standing as one of the nation's only unbeaten teams and topping the college basketball leaderboard, Purdue basketball was finally handed its first loss of the season by an all too familiar foe!

In a thrilling finish, Rutgers basketball took down No. 1 Purdue 65-64, marking the second straight season that coach Steve Pikiell's Knights team has upset the top-ranked Boilermakers.

Purdue (13-1) was led by its star center Zach Edey, who overcame early foul trouble to finish with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

"I have to stay out of foul trouble in the first," Edey said after the game. "Obviously, I picked up a quick early one. The second I picked up pretty quickly, too. I have to be able to play more minutes in games like these. I can't bench myself with foul trouble, it's something I can't do."

While the Boilermakers did make improvements on the court by the second half, Rutgers senior Cam Spencer sealed the deal with a game-winning 3-pointer to secure one of the biggest upsets of the season so far.

"They're a tough team and they fight," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "They make it tough for you to throw it inside, they make it tough for you to catch the ball, but it's not impossible. We just had to show more resolve. At the end of the day, I just thought that Rutgers was mentally and physically tougher than we were, even if we would have won the game."

Following Purdue's shocking upset, New Mexico is now the only unbeaten team in men's Division I college basketball.

Will Purdue stay as the nation's leader on the court?

After so many shocking upsets by top-ranked teams this season, it's fair to ask: who is really the nation's best men's college basketball team?

While the Boilermakers currently stand as the nation's best team per the AP rankings, their top spot will likely change after losing to Rutgers.

With that being said, the door for a new No. 1 team is now wide open, and there are plenty of candidates deserving of that top spot!

The Houston Cougars are currently 14-1 this season and ranked the second-best team behind Purdue. Meaning, the Cougars have the greatest chance of snagging the top spot after losing it in Week 6.

The UConn Huskies, also 14-1 this season, are another possible team that may climb to the No. 1 spot after this week's matchups.

As the first team in the country to win 14 straight games, the Huskies lost to Xavier on Saturday but will look to make a turnaround on the road against Providence on Wednesday at 8:30 PM EST.

The next men's college basketball AP Poll rankings will be released on January 9.
