According to The Guardian, Samuel Reveron Ascanio and Kevin Rodriguez were arrested in Queens on September 24 after police tracked them using surveillance footage to a manhole where they emerged with four other individuals, who have yet to be identified.

The group caused a stir, as the manhole was near a hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was staying when he was scheduled to attend a United Nations assembly.

Ascanio – a migrant from Venezuela – reportedly told police, "We go into the sewer and look for valuables that get stuck in the storm drains and sewers, gold, anything of value."

The story of the "mole people" has fascinated New Yorkers, as multiple videos shared to social media have caught disguised individuals climbing out of manholes across the city at seemingly random moments.

The New York Post reports that shortly before his arrest, a federal warrant was issued for Ascanio's arrest stemming from a previous incident where he was charged for criminal mischief.

While the arrest has been determined to be unrelated to Netanyahu's visit, Ascanio has since been taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and will likely face deportation.
