Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – This creepy figure is one you don’t want to encounter: more than a dozen people have been startled and chased by a man wearing a doll mask in recent days. Police in Pennsylvania have now publicly identified the troublemaker.
As the department announced on the platform X, the terrifying attacks by 22-year-old suspect Zymire Hughes took place on August 12 in Center City in Philadelphia. According to the report, the 22‑year‑old primarily targeted pedestrians and joggers. During the incidents, Hughes constantly wore a white doll mask reminiscent of the horror icon “Chucky.”
According to ABC News, Hughes allegedly carried out several assaults within half an hour and is said to have frightened or chased about 16 people. Surveillance footage showed the masked man lying in wait for a 40‑year‑old jogger. Moments later, he allegedly asked the woman if she was ready to die.
The jogger screamed and fled, then fell while trying to escape, the Philadelphia Police Department said. As a result, the woman injured her leg. Authorities are now looking for additional victims and have released images of the suspect, who is on the run.
“There is an arrest warrant for him. Hughes may have fled Pennsylvania and could have ties to California and Nevada,” the department wrote on X. As the officers explained to the news outlet, a lengthy legal process lies ahead for the man.
Hughes is accused of terroristic threat, harassment, assault, reckless endangerment, and intimidation. The district attorney, Larry Krasner, also commented on the suspect’s flight: “Who’s scared now? Who’s running away?” Hughes’s smartphone also plays a pivotal role in the case.
Surveillance footage shows the 22‑year‑old holding a mobile phone. Authorities believe he recorded his own actions to publish them later. For several days, police have been scouring social media, hoping to catch the perpetrator in the act.
Philadelphia police continue to search for the suspect
"He's a punk who has frightened many people without any valid reason – and we will not tolerate that," Krasner said.
Authorities in Philadelphia suspect there may be additional victims in the Hughes case and are asking the public for help. Whether the 22‑year‑old will strike again with his white doll mask remains uncertain.
"He targets men and women – basically anyone he comes across," the statement continued. According to the prosecutor, Hughes is currently not in Philadelphia.
The search for the suspect continues. The Philadelphia Police Department is now trying to locate him and arrest him in the process.
