In a statement provided to the AFP, the Prime Minister's Office said Carney spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, telling the leader the deal undermines efforts for stability in the region and ending the war, which Russia launched without cause.

"The Prime Minister was clear: this agreement is in direct opposition to the efforts of Ukraine, Canada, and our allies to create peace and stability in Europe," the office claimed.

Carney further argued the deal would "provide additional revenue for Russia and help finance its illegal, unjustifiable war against Ukraine."

The remarks come after President Trump announced on Friday that he had struck a deal with Russian leader Vladimir Putin for the country to release diesel into US and global markets,

Trump vowed the move would help cool surging energy costs resulting from his ongoing war with Iran, which, similar to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, was launched unprovoked.

Zelensky criticized the deal as "a birthday present to Putin," to which Trump suggested Ukraine should elect a new president.

On Sunday morning, Trump claimed in a social media post that Russia and Ukraine had reached "an ENERGY CEASEFIRE."

While Russia has remained silent on the announcement, Zelensky has said Ukraine supports the measure, adding that the country "always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war."
