Trump shares bizarre meme making wild comparison between Obama and Nixon
Washington DC - President Donald Trump shared a bizarre meme on social media comparing corruption under former President Barack Obama with what it was like under Richard Nixon.
"One of these men is the most corrupt president in the history of the United States," read the caption of a meme shared by Trump on his Truth Social platform on Sunday. "The other is Richard Nixon."
The meme featured a split screen of Obama and Nixon's presidential portraits. Trump has long criticized Obama, who served as president before the reality star and property mogul entered the White House for the first time in 2017.
Comparing Obama to Nixon is but the next such criticism, placing the country's first black president alongside a Republican who resigned in disgrace in 1974 amid the infamous Watergate scandal.
Nixon was accused at the time of knowing about and assisting in the cover up of a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the lead up to the 1972 presidential election.
He was replaced by Gerald Ford, his Vice President, who granted him a full and unconditional pardon.
The incident makes Nixon the only president to have resigned from office in disgrace, facing likely impeachment and prosecution. Only Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Trump himself, have been impeached.
Meanwhile, Obama never faced threats of impeachment and, while many of his actions in office were unpopular or controversial, he is not generally believed to have engaged in corrupt behavior.
Over the course of his second administration, Trump has been regularly accused of corruption – most recently by MS NOW's Joe Scarborough, who pointed to political advertisements the president funded with tax money.
He faces numerous accusations of profiting from the office of president, his family, and associates making billions in stock sales, cryptocurrency, and deals with foreign powers.
