Atlanta, Georgia - Democrat Everton Blair is headed to Congress after winning Tuesday's special election runoff in Georgia.
Georgia's 13th congressional district has been without a representative after Congressman David Scott passed away on April 22. He was seeking his 13th term in office at the time of his death.
Per the Associated Press, Blair got 54% of the vote to replace Scott on Tuesday. The former Gwinnett County School Board chair defeated the late representative's daughter, fellow Democrat Marcye Scott, who got 46%.
Both candidates advanced to the runoff after Scott came out on top with 46% of the vote, followed by Blair at 37.4%, in a special election late last month.
"Thank you, GA-13! I am humbled by the trust you placed in me tonight. This victory belongs to every voter, volunteer, supporter, and neighbor who believed in our campaign," Blair posted on X after his win.
"It will be the honor of my life to serve you in Congress," he added.
In November, the House seat will be up for election again, with Democratic state Representative Jasmine Clark facing off against Republican Air Force veteran Jonathan Chavez for a full, two-year term.
