Charlottesville, Virginia - Republican James Fishback recently announced that he may be running for president in 2028, becoming one of the first politicians to enter the race.
In an X post, Fishback shared a video clip from a speech he gave at the University of Virginia the night before, where he revealed that he planned to run for president.
"I told them the truth," he further wrote in the post.
After The Hill published an article about the announcement, Fishback – a self-described devout Catholic – shared an X post clarifying that he and his wife will hold town halls following the midterm elections, after which they will issue an official decision "after reflection and prayer."
The announcement comes after Fishback ran a failed gubernatorial bid earlier this year, coming in third in the GOP primary with only 10.5% of the vote, far behind winner Byron Donalds.
The politician is something of a wild card in the GOP.
While he falls in line with extreme far-right aspects of the party, such as supporting neo-Nazi Nick Fuentes and pushing the white nationalist Great Replacement theory, he also carries views that run counter to his fellow Republicans, such as being highly critical of Israel and President Donald Trump.
There have been concerns raised about Fishback's eligibility to run, as he was born on January 1, 1995, making him 34 on Inauguration Day in 2029 – just shy of the 35-year-old age minimum set by the Constitution.
