Washington DC - Hunter Biden launched his very own memecoin, referencing his notorious laptop, and promised to hand out tokens to investors who lost money on President Donald Trump's cryptocurrency.
Biden announced his new memecoin, dubbed "$LAPTOP," in a post to X on Monday. The coin will have a total supply of one billion tokens, with 20% of the supply set aside for those who have lost money on Trump's "$TRUMP" token.
Reported on first by the Wall Street Journal, the coin will launch on September 9 and is inspired by the Trump administration's obsession with his former computer.
The contents of Hunter Biden's laptop has long been a subject of conversation for far-right politicians and influencers associated with MAGA. Files contained within included messages about foreign business dealings, nude photos, and images of drug use.
Trump allies have obsessed over the findings, which followed the device's discovery in 2020, making Hunter Biden the center of many – mostly unfounded – conspiracy theories. These theories were used to relentlessly attack former President Joe Biden, Hunter's dad.
While memecoins carry no intrinsic value, they have been known to make celebrities and public figures huge quantities of cash, often before rapidly crashing.
In August, Hunter Biden went on a social media rant against Trump's use of cryptocurrencies and his memecoin to make billions, referring to the practice as "corruption at a scale we've never seen."
"The leader of the free world is literally holding people’s money hostage," he wrote.
"By the time this house of cards collapses, the Trump family will have made hundreds of millions of dollars, sold its tokens, and left the American people holding the bag."
