Newberry, South Carolina - Senator Darline Graham, the sister of late Senator Lindsey Graham, admitted during a trainwreck debate appearance that she's "not that informed on national security."
The bizarre moment came as Graham faced off against Representative Ralph Norman, her opponent in the runoff election to succeed her brother, in a televised debate that saw her subjected to boos from the audience.
In July, Graham replaced her brother in the Senate with the endorsement of President Donald Trump after he unexpectedly passed away only weeks earlier.
Other than her closeness to Lindsey Graham, Darline has no experience with elected office on the federal stage. She worked for the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department from 2008 and in 2019 became commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.
She made the mistake of pointing out this inexperience on the debate stage when asked a question about the importance of the Taiwan-US relationship.
"I'm just gonna be honest here, I'm not on national security that, I'm not that informed on national security," she admitted. "But I do support the military – my brother was in the air force for 33 years."
"So I will do everything I can to support the military. My dad was in the army, I'm not a polished politician up here, national security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I do support the military."
Amid boos directed at Graham, Norman stepped in to provide a clearer answer on Taiwan, explaining: "Taiwan's a definite ally, and we have a trading relationship with them that is beneficial to the United States."
"What the president is doing right is he's enabling Taiwan to defend themselves against China," he said. "It's peace through strength that he's showing through Iran."
