Beijing, China - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday told Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Roberto Velasco Álvarez that no third party should influence their country's relationship.
"China-Mexico relations are not directed at any third party, nor should they be influenced by any third party," Wang told Velasco Álvarez on Monday, making a veiled reference to the Donald Trump administration's repeated attempts to influence China-Mexico relations.
"China appreciates Mexico's long-term and firm adherence to the one-China principle and supports Mexico in maintaining its independence and autonomy, safeguarding its sovereignty and security, and opposing external interference," Wang was cited as saying by Beijing's state-run news agency Xinhua.
The comments came as Velasco Álvarez visited with top Chinese officials in Beijing, his first such trip since taking office in April.
"In the meeting, I highlighted the coincidences between our countries regarding principles of foreign policy," Velasco Álvarez wrote in a post to X translated from Spanish.
"We discussed the mutual willingness to identify new opportunities for cooperation; and the interest in continuing to expand the bonds of friendship between our countries."
Both China and Mexico have repeatedly pushed back against attempts by the Trump administration in Washington to exert influence over foreign countries' domestic and international affairs.
Ahead of the opening of the G20 finance officials gathering in North Carolina last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Reuters, "The rest of the world is going to have to examine their terms of trade with China."
Last week, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum slammed the US for its attempts to "divide us internally," declaring that Washington seeks to weaken "independent governments that defend sovereignty."
