Mexico City, Mexico - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday declared on social media that her country "will not be a colony or protectorate" of any other country, namely the US.

"In the month of our homeland, we reaffirm that Mexico is not and will not be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country," Sheinbaum said in a post to X on Monday. "Proudly, we are a free, independent, and sovereign country."

Sheinbaum's comment came as a veiled response to posts to Truth Social by President Donald Trump, who has on multiple occasions suggested that Mexico should be taken over by and become part of the US.

During a lengthy posting spree on Monday, Trump posted an image of North America showing the entire continent – Canada, Mexico, and the US – as well as Greenland and large swaths of Central America as US territory.

Her post also came only a days after Trump publicly called for the state of New Mexico to be renamed to "New America," the latest renaming bid to be endorsed by the 80-year-old president.

Mexico City and Washington have been constantly at loggerheads since Trump reentered office in January last year. While trying to maintain positive trade negotiations with the Trump administration, Sheinbaum's government has been forced to repeatedly reassert Mexico's sovereignty and push back against political interference.

After numerous Mexican politicians had their US visas revoked by the Trump administration last month, Sheinbaum warned that Washington has a "desire to intervene" in her country's internal politics.

"This amounts to interference in Mexican politics," Sheinbaum said. "I see no other reason for ‌it."
