Aaron Carter fans and family furious over Grammys snub
Los Angeles, California - The "In Memoriam" segment of the 2023 Grammy Awards was a poignant and emotional part of a historic night, yet one star's glaring omission is causing controversy, as the late Aaron Carter's fans and family hit back at a perceived snub.
The past year saw the sad passing of many legends of the music industry, from Loretta Lynn and David Crosby, to Lisa Marie Presley, Coolio, and Olivia Newton-John.
Lynn got her own musical tribute from country singer Kacey Musgraves, while the sorely missed rapper Takeoff, who was shot and killed in 2022, was honored by his uncle and fellow Migos member, Quavo.
But there was also one conspicuous absence from the poignant moment: pop star Aaron Carter, who was tragically found dead last November.
"10 million records sold. youngest solo artist ever to have 4 consecutive top 10 singles in the UK. performed for millions. hundreds of millions of streams. a career lasting 25 years. you deserved to be mentioned," one Twitter user wrote.
But it wasn't just social media users who expressed their outrage.
Melanie Martin, the singer's fiancé and the mother of his son, posted a scathing attack on the Recording Academy in her Instagram Stories, saying: "How do you dare leave Aaron Carter off of the memorial tribute for musicians lost in 2022!!"
"This is so unacceptable, outrageous, vile, & deplorable" she added, also telling TMZ that the omission was "a slap in the face to his legacy and his son."
Though Carter wasn't shown on screen during the Grammy broadcast, PEOPLE reported that his name was included in the print copy of the official event program.
