Los Angeles, California – Just over three years after the death of actor Matthew Perry, close friends and family members have recounted the "true story" of the Friends star in a new Netflix documentary.
The three‑part documentary series The One About Matthew Perry made its Netflix debut on Tuesday. In the roughly hour‑long episodes, a total of 18 people share their encounters with Perry, who died at the end of 2023 from a ketamine overdose.
Among them are his younger sister Mia Perry Bowick and his longtime best friend Roger Castillo. Both speak on camera about Perry for the first time, as the Netflix magazine Tudum reported.
Bowick described her participation as "a really beautiful way for me to learn about my own grieving process." In the documentary, she also shares previously unreleased private photos and videos.
Perry's co‑stars from the beloved sitcom Friends, however, do not speak on the record. All five declined a Netflix request, director Mary Robertson explained: "We know the cast of Friends loves Matthew and are grieving in their own ways."
With the documentary, Robertson wanted to make a film for every Perry fan "to love him more." At the same time, the darker aspects of the actor's life, including his battle with addiction, are also touched upon.
