Los Angeles, California - Actor and comedian Rosie O'Donnell got an adorable and touching tattoo tribute to her beloved child, who came out as non-binary in 2024 at the age of 12.
O'Donnell made the revelation on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast on Tuesday, explaining that the decision to get the inking was both a tribute to her child and a reminder to refer to them by the appropriate pronoun.
According to the comedian, her child Clay wrote the word "they" on a piece of cardboard. She then took the writing to a tattoo artist and had it inked, in Clay's handwriting, onto her left wrist.
"It's very hard, honey," O'Donnell said in reference to Clay's chosen pronoun. "I know it matters to them, and so when they first told me that it was they/them, I tried my best, but I kept saying 'she.'"
"So they wrote on a cardboard paper, 'they,' and then they would hold it up above their head every time I said 'she' like John Cusack in Say Anything, with the boombox just staring at me," O'Donnell explained.
"I had it tattooed on my wrist so that I would never forget, that it would remind me."
O'Donnell adopted Clay during her short marriage to Michelle Rounds, who passed away in 2017. She is also the adoptive mother of four other children.
In 2025, she moved to Ireland along with her children in response to the re-election of President Donald Trump, who has publicly feuded with her for years and mused about revoking her US citizenship on multiple occasions.
"His people don't care about anything he does, apparently even the sexual abuse of children," O'Donnell said of Trump in July. "I think it's the worst thing that ever happened to the United States."
