Is Tom Cruise giving back his Golden Globe trophies?

Los Angeles, California - The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which awards the Golden Globes each year, has received more negative press than ever – with major actors returning their awards until changes are made in the organization.

Hollywood's Foreign Press Association continues to come under pressure, with Tom Cruise (58) reportedly returning his three Globe trophies to the organization in a protest.

Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise (58) is said to have returned his three Globe trophies to the organization in an action of protest, People Magazine reported on Monday.

Cruise won the awards for his roles in Born on the 4th of July (1990), Jerry Maguire (1997), and Magnolia (2000).

After growing criticism of the association, NBC also laid down some consequences on Monday, announcing that it would not broadcast the Globe Gala in 2022.

The HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) is the group of international journalists that determines who is nominated for the Golden Globe Awards each year. NBC says the association must invest time and work to implement major reforms.

The network hopes to show the gala again in January 2023 after appropriate changes have been made.

Lack of diversity, non-transparent membership criteria

The HFPA is accused of a lack of diversity and non-transparent membership criteria, among other things. A central point of criticism is that the organization has little LGBTQ representation in its ranks and no Black journalists as members.

Stars like Scarlett Johansson (36) and Mark Ruffalo (53) have also publicly shamed the organization, with Johansson sharing that she had been subjected to "sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment."

"It is the exact reason why I, for many years, refused to participate in their conferences," she said.

Other organizations including Amazon Studios and Netflix have also terminated their association with the organization.
