Washington DC - The US Navy is reportedly moving to name an aircraft carrier after President Donald Trump instead of a Black war hero as previously planned.
Sources recently told CNN that there have been internal discussions to name the carrier in honor of the president.
This comes despite the Navy announcing during Trump's first term in office that it would be named the USS Doris Miller in honor of the Black sailor who valiantly defended against Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Miller was the first black recipient of the Navy Cross and kept up service in the Navy until he was killed in action in November of 1943 at the Battle of Makin.
It remains unclear what the new name for the carrier will be or when such a change would be implemented.
The Navy instead plans to honor Miller by naming another warship after him and recommending he receive the Medal of Honor, which would have to be approved by Congress and President Trump.
Officials are also looking into updating the official guidance for how ships should be named and specifying who they can be named after, such as sitting presidents.
The news comes as President Trump and his MAGA loyalists have been going to wild and unprecedented lengths in his second term to attach his name and likeness to everything they can, such as monuments, passports, meme coins, and airports.
A number of former presidents have had Navy ships named after them – including Abraham Lincoln, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and George Washington – though the honor has never been bestowed while one was still in office.
